Perfect Hand Cream

The product: Geranium Shea Butter Hand Cream by The Soap & Paper Company.

What it’s good for: Your hands, of course. But it’s also great for dry elbows, feet, legs, etc.

Key natural ingredients: Shea Butter, Aloe, Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter, Beewswax, Borage Oil, and Meadowfoam Oil.

The price tag: $18 (or possibly less – I found it for $4.99 at TJ Maxx!)

Where to buyOrder online (when it’s back in stock) or hope to find it in a discount store like I did. While the Geranium is out of stock, they also have so many other awesome scents to choose from.

My favorite perk: There is no room for improvement in the consistency of this hand cream. It is so rich, yet not greasy, and absorbs perfectly. I also love the strong geranium scent. I don’t normally like strong scents, but because they actually use essential oils, the scent is really natural and very calming (geranium is known for that). I highly recommend using it before bed so you can reap the aromatherapy benefits and maybe even fall asleep a bit easier.

Dry Hands?

What is it: (seed) Healthy Hand Cream

What it’s good for: Healing and protecting the driest of hands.

{via}

Key natural ingredients: Rich and therapeutic seed oils including Grape Seed, Sunflower Seed, Jojoba Seed and Safflower Seed. This Seedology® is calming, protecting, anti-aging and extremely moisturizing.

Where to buy it:  At one of these (seed) retailers.

How much: $6.99 – $8

My favorite perk: The relaxing lavender scent, which instantly transports me to some of my favorite spa experiences. (The hand cream is also available in Invigorating Citrus and Fragrance-Free.)

A.N.A. featured on WebMD

I recently had the opportunity to provide some of my favorite homemade, natural beauty recipes to WebMD. I’m really excited to have three of my recipes now featured on the site and I’m even more excited to see WebMD’s interest in the realm of natural beauty!

Here are a few recipes to try at home that will help you get 2013 started off on a naturally beautiful foot:

Soothing Oatmeal Face Mask

Purifying Lemon Ginger Foot Soak

Rejuvenating Coconut Oil Hair Mask

A belated Happy New Year everyone! I hope it’s a very happy and healthy year for you. I want to thank you for being a reader of AllNaturalAnnie.com. This blog started out as an outlet for my love of holistic health and natural beauty back in 2008. While I’m still just as passionate about these topics, I know my posts have been a lot less frequent this past year. I truly appreciate everyone who continues to be a reader and I plan on having posts be a lot more frequent in 2013!

Product of the Week

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I wanted to start this week off by talking about a company I’ve always wondered about and finally tried. Farmaesthetics is a 100% natural line that uses certified organic herbs, flowers, oils and grains from American family farms to create their wide range of skincare products.

Farmaesthetics’ Midnight Honey Bath & Beauty Oil is my latest favorite product for moisturizing, especially now that the weather is colder and my skin is drier.  The best time to use this incredibly sweet and rich smelling oil is post-shower when you’re still a bit damp and pores are open so the oil is more easily absorbed by the skin.  With just 3 ingredients (sweet soy oil, honey absolute and vitamin E) the Midnight Honey Oil is just like the rest of the Farmesthetics line — a really simplistic yet well thought out and highly effective combination of ingredients from nature.

I can’t wait to visit Farmaesthetics’ flagship store in Newport, Rhode Island one of these days. It looks like such a lovely space and it’s in one of my favorite places.

You can see the store and learn more about the line in this 2 minute interview with the founder, Brenda Brock:

Dry Skin?

I hate to bring this to everyone’s attention, but we are now just a month and a few days away from the official start of winter! With that said, the colder weather has already been shocking a lot of us and that shock often comes in the form of dry skin – like really, really dry skin, which is not very pleasant or pretty.

If you’re someone who experiences dryness and is looking for a really rich yet natural facial moisturizer I would highly recommend Pomega5’s Healing Cream. It is ultra nourishing and reparative with key ingredients like pomegranate oil, shea butter, calendula oil and carrot oil.  It’s a tad pricey ($70), but a little goes a long way and the ingredients are sooo therapeutic. Let me know if you give it a try!

Have a great weekend :)

Fall-Ready Skin Care

As the colder weather crawls in for many of us, there are definitely two things you’ll want to have on hand – lip balm and hand cream.  No one wants chapped lips or rough hands so here are two recommendations to keep them both smooth, bright and well-hydrated.

{Certified Organic Cocoa Powder with a hint of Essential Oil of Lavender & Organic Blueberry Flavor! .15 oz Tube  $3.49}

Eco Lips makes some of the best petroleum-free lip balm on the market with a line that includes both 100% organic options as well as a vegan balm. They have a flavor for everyone, especially since they teamed up with Honest Tea® and Dagoba® chocolate to bring us some seriously fun and unique flavors (like the one above).  AND they have tinted options as well!  For the quality, you can’t beat the prices – lip balms are all under $3.50 and the tinted are under $4.50.

This Exfoliage Natural Hand Cream by TonicCare is normally $24.99, but with the current online sale it’s now $12.99. It’s specifically designed to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on hands (aka one of the places where aging often shows the most and the soonest). Some of the beneficial natural ingredients include Grape Seed Oil, Algae Extract, Chamomile Oil, Almond Oil and Papaya Fruit Extract.

More fall beauty recommendations to come! Have a great Monday.

Soothing Oatmeal Mask

Here is a 3 ingredient mask that works so well for dry skin!

Combine:

  • 1/4 cup finely ground oatmeal (a coffee grinder is the ideal tool)
  • 2 Tbsp whole milk (preferably organic)
  • 1 tsp honey

How to:

  1. Spread mixture over your face and let it set for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Rinse well with warm H20 and pat your face try.

The Wonders of Neem

Neem is an ancient herb from India, which is known for its medicinal benefits externally and internally. Neem’s extremely high antioxidant content, high levels of fatty acids as well as its anti-inflammatory properties and antibacterial abilities makes it an excellent choice for people with chronically dry or irritated skin. Some people have even reported healing of precancerous cells!

When taken internally, neem is said to support the health of skin, immune system response, blood purification, and healthy bowel function.

The one thing I must warn you about is that neem has a VERY distinct odor. I would say it’s like a mix of peanuts and garlic. I know that doesn’t sound very appealing, but when mixed with other scents, it’s not so noticeable. Plus, its benefits can be well worth getting used to the unique scent.

Here are some beauty products with neem that I really love:

Organix’s Theraneem Ultimate Support Orange & Ylang Ylang – Excellent for sensitive skin. I love using it instead of face wash. ( $5.56)

Organix’s Neem, Lemon & Peppermint TheraNeem Scalp Therape Shampoo – Clarifies and rejuvenates the scalp. (on sale for $11.96)

Auromère’s Ayurvedic Lavender-Neem Soap – Lavender + Neem + 16 other herbal extracts to cleanse and restore skin. ($2.95)

Dr.Hauschka’s Neem Hair Oil – Ideal for an irritated scalp and dry/damaged hair. Also adds great shine! ($39.95)

Have you tried any products that contained neem before?

Award-Winning Skincare for Babies!

You might remember my previous post about Skincando’s Combat-Ready Balm — the wonder salve that’s even effective for troops in the harshest of conditions. Now, there is a version for babies and kids! This miracle cream has similar ingredients, which soothe and heal some of the most delicate skin on earth aka a baby’s. But this is totally an adult product as well. Baby skincare products are great for adult skin, especially if it’s sensitive.  I just love how multifunctional this one is — it’s magical for dry skin, eczema, diaper rash, eczema, bug bites, sunburn, and more! I can’t wait to buy this for some of the soon-to-be new moms in my life.

Favorite Natural Moisturizers

It’s always important to keep our skin well hydrated, but now that the weather is turning cooler for many of is, it’s especially important (and challenging) to keep dry skin away.

Here are a few of my absolute favorite body moisturizers. I now have my sister in love with the Shikai Gardenia lotion too. Are you a fan of any of these or do you have some other natural favorites?

Shikai (around $7.99)

I especially adore the Gardenia (it truly smells JUST like the flower), but there also a lot of other fun scents (yuzu, honeysuckle, etc)

Hugo Naturals (around $10.99)

This lotion is SO rich without being greasy. The Shea Butter & Oatmeal is such a delicious and comforting scent.

Rainbow Research Inc. (around $7.99)

Best choice for really sensitive skin!

Dr. Hauschka (around $12.99)

So rich and perfect for dry, winter hands! Specifically helps to keep the appropriate pH balance of skin.

Desert Essence (around $8.99)

Can’t forget the feet! Often one of the hardest areas to keep moisturized, but this foot cream does wonders. And it’s pistachio – a fun & unique scent!

For Baked Potatoes, Bagels & Your Face!

Here are 2 more easy, natural masks to add to your beauty routine! Both masks are excellent for reducing redness as well as moisturizing and refining skin.

If you have sensitive skin, try this single ingredient mask twice a week:

  • Apply a tablespoon of full-fat sour cream to skin for 20 minutes.

Why it works? The lactic acid gently smooths skin and improves textures. This is a great alternative for people who react badly to store-bought masks.

Another similar option:

  • Apply a tablespoon of full-fat cream cheese to skin for 20 minutes.

My mom actually told me to do this one jokingly when I was complaining about dry skin.  I laughed at first, but gave it a try (remembering that my mom’s beauty suggestions for me always seem to work best). She was right, again! Definitely opt for the full fat version for best results and organic, if possible.

Dry skin?

A  really easy, natural mask for dry skin has just one ingredient: avocado.

  • Simply apply a mashed, ripe avocado to skin once a week. It’s that simple!

You’ll get even more benefits if you eat the leftovers so make some guacamole while you’re mashing or put a few slices on your next salad.

{via}

Another option: apply a tablespoon of olive oil to your face instead of your usual night cream weekly (skip this one if you’re blemish-prone)

If you’re currently experiencing dry skin, it’s a good idea to get a handle on it now before the cold weather comes in and that healthy glow becomes even more of a challenge!

A Natural Beauty Must-Have

For a while, I didn’t have jojoba oil on hand and I really missed it! It’s definitely my favorite oil when it comes to natural beauty. Jojoba oil is just such a great, versatile natural beauty product to keep on hand. Chemically, jojoba oil is perfect for us humans because its molecular structure is identical to our skin and hair sebum. Jojoba oil has a wide range of uses, but some of my favorites include using it as a makeup remover and facial moisturizer, and also on split ends. These are just a few of its many uses (there are at least 15). My favorite 100% Pure Jojoba Oil costs around $12 and is made by Desert Essence. For a little under $3 more, Desert Essence also makes a 100% Pure Certified Organic Jojoba Oil. Either way you go, you’ll find so many uses for this natural beauty aide, and a little goes a long way so it should last you quite a while!

Mixin’ It Up

For anyone who is into aromatherapy, here are some pretty simple and therapeutic aromatherapy mixtures from Tisserand. Each mix is geared towards a particular situation/ailment ranging from travel to dry skin!

Refreshing & Aromatic

For a great, all natural face and body spray, try one of Pangea Organics Facial Toners. These sprays are truly skin and mood enlivening with herbal and fruit mixtures like Italian Green Mandarin with Sweet Lime, Argentinian Tangerine and Thyme, or French Rosemary with Sweet Orange. I’m currently enjoying the Rosemary and Orange, which is great for dry skin, especially in the warm weather when you don’t want to use a lot of heavy moisturizer. I also love spraying this toner in my hair for added moisture, bounce, and fragrance.

Tropical Skin Smoother for Dry/Mature Skin

Mychelle Dermaceuticals makes a face mask that truly transports your senses to a warm and sunny place instantly! This face mask is appropriately named Tropical Skin Smoother. The two key ingredients in this face mask are Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Cream) Fruit and Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon Zest) Peel. The coconut cream fruit smoothes and softens skin with its rich vitamin, mineral and fatty acid content. Meanwhile, the lemon peel acts as a natural astringent and brightens the skin.

Glycolic acid, derived from rhubarb, is also a very key and powerful anti-aging ingredient, making this mask a great choice for mature skin. I love that this face mask only needs to be left on for 1 MINUTE to experience its benefits!

I’ve been a fan of Mychelle since I found out about them about 2 years ago. I love what the products do have (a lot of fruit-derived ingredients) and what they NEVER have (phthalates, parabens, propylene glycol, ureas, EDTA, fragrances, particles, and artificial colors).

If you’re someone who wants to start using a high-quality natural face mask on a regular basis, but don’t have a lot of extra time, then this is a perfect choice for you!
