Keep Your Coffee Chlorine-Free!

Happy Friday everyone! As many of you are probably looking forward to a relaxing and tasty cup of coffee tomorrow morning, here’s a little tip — if you use a drip coffee maker, be sure to use non-bleached filters. The bright white ones (which most people use) are chlorine bleached and some of this chlorine will be extracted from the filter during the brewing process!

So instead, opt for healthier filters that are chlorine-free (and often brown like the one pictured here) and keep your morning brew on the up and up. Bonus points for drinking organic ;)

Here is one brand that makes 100% chlorine free filters:  Melitta

Enjoy the last days of April!

Win an Acupressure Mat!

WHAT IS IT: a Heavenly Acupressure Mat that has a total of 8,820 contact points, which stimulate your skin and acupressure points in your body. By laying or standing on the mat, the contact points can help your body to release endorphins and oxytocin, your body’s own pain relieving and feel-good hormones. Ideally, by using the acupressure mat for just 20 minutes each day you can effectively relieve pain, promote relaxation and increase energy levels.

To be more specific, with regular use you may achieve the following benefits:

  • Reduced pain, including backache and tension headaches
  • Decreased muscular tension and stiffness
  • Stress and anxiety relief
  • Strengthened immune system
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Increased metabolism and mental clarity
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Increased energy levels and decreased chronic fatigue
  • Improved sleep, especially stress induced insomnia
  • Deep sense of relaxation

Definitely a great range of possible benefits! To be honest, it’s pretty weird at first… think bed of nails. Or don’t think bed of nails because that probably sounds really painful for good reason. It is far from the feeling of lying on a bed of nails (not that I speak from personal experience), but the general idea is similar. Actually, I found that if you wear anything that is too thick when using the mat then you barely feel the contact points. So I definitely suggest that you opt for very thin clothing or even bare skin.

Be Clean & Green

Reusable bags are a great way to bring home groceries and other goodies without producing any trash in the process. However, there’s some things you definitely don’t want to be bringing home with these green carriers – things like E. coli and salmonella. Yikes! Researchers have found these intruders often contaminate reusable cloth bags. One way to prevent this is to wash your bags in hot water regularly, especially after you’ve been carrying fresh produce or raw meat. I like to toss mine in the washer (with hot H20 & detergent) every so often to keep them nice and clean.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! I plan on using some reusable bags at the farmers market tomorrow morning :)

Peacock Republic

I recently discovered another awesome green beauty line called Peacock Republic and it has quickly become one of my favorites. I’m especially loving having this gem in my shower right now – their lemongrass love body wash. The scent is just perfect – invigorating in the morning yet calming in the evening and enjoyed by male and female noses alike. I also love their fragrant sugar scrubs and rich body lotions.

Bottom line: definitely add Peacock Republic to your must-try list of natural beauty companies!

Peacock Republic doesn’t stop at making luxurious, green body care products – for each bottle and bar sold, they donate a bar to those without basic necessities. And for all other products sold, they donate a portion of the profits to charities. Even more of a reason to give them a try (if you haven’t already).

You can purchase online or check out the list of boutiques that carry them across the U.S. here: peacockrepublic.myshopify.com/pages/stockists AND starting next month Peacock Republic will be at Anthropologie and online at www.anthropologie.com!

Stretch It Out

In today’s world, the majority of us are spending a great deal of time on the computer. As effortless as typing and clicking can seem, it’s shocking the range of physical pains and strains that can result from being on your computer.  To start this week off right, I thought it would be nice to share some stretches that are all extremely simple to do, but if practiced regularly can have major rewards.

HOW TO: Point Your Fingers (good for hands, wrist & forearms)

  1. Stretch your left hand out in front of you, pointing fingers toward the floor.
  2. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pushing your fingers down and toward the body. Be gentle.
  3. Do the same with the other hand.
  4. Now stretch your left hand out straight in front, wrist bent, with fingers pointing skyward. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pulling the fingers back toward your body.
  5. Do the same on the other side.

In general, make it a point to take regular breaks from your computer every hour throughout the day. Take a quick walk, get a cup of tea or whatever you like! Just make sure it’s something enjoyable and entirely detached from technology so that you can give your body a true physical and mental break.

Hope everyone has a great start to their week!

A Less Acidic Cup of Coffee

I read some pretty interesting news this weekend — scientists have found that dark roasted coffee beans generate a chemical that actually reduces acid production in the stomach. So surprisingly, dark roasts like French and Italian are actually easier on your stomach! I particularly enjoy this news because when I drink coffee I always prefer dark roasts.  Also, it’s been found that the darker roasts actually have less caffeine than the lighter roasts. {Read more}

If you drink coffee – do you prefer light, medium or dark roasts?

Hello Monday

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We made our yearly trip to the Cherry Blossom Festival yesterday, which was gorgeous as usual.  Surprisingly though almost all of the trees had white flowers rather than the usual pink ones – still very pretty, but different. Today, I’m looking forward to it making it up to almost 80 degrees! Makes me want to be in an outdoor space like this one…

How’s your Monday going so far?
